But all I can think is, “They broke their legs.”

As I drink my tea, the sun is rising in a breathtaking flourish of colours,

But all I can think is, “They broke their legs.”

As I go for my morning run, the cold is pressing in on me,

But all I can think is, “They broke their legs.”

As I think about my children, I’m relieved to know where they are,

But all I can think is, “They broke their legs.”

As I go through my workday, there are few moments of idleness,

But all I can think is, “They broke their legs.”

As I crawl under the covers at night, I believe my house is secure,

But all I can think is, “They broke their legs.”

They went to dance, but it turned into a massacre, kidnapping, rape.

They broke their legs so they couldn’t close them and couldn’t fight back as they were torn apart, splayed between the lifeless bodies of family and friends, awaiting their own end.

As I scroll through the interminable photos of missing children, dead families, decimated communities, and vitriol and uninformed blame directed at the victims rather than the monsters, I am devastated.

But all I can think is, “They went to dance, and they broke their legs.”
