From the funeral of Staff Sgt. Lavi Lipshitz, age 20, at Mt. Herzl

A wave surfs the waters, foaming with glee
But on the shore crash, all the ones before he
“Doomed we all are!” it cries with emotion
“We’re not waves” shrugs another — “We’re part of the ocean.”

I long for happiness
I shoot for the stars
Living my own life —
I’m bound to go far
My goals are ambitious, and while they do
Help others, I know that really they’re all about me
I’d save the planet
I’d learn and teach
I’d be a tsunami, leave permanent marks with my be
A wave surfs the waters, foaming with glee

But swords strike the desert
Battle binds with sadness, iron bars
Blood-red stains the land
And all else breaks to shards
We try our best to help, to send out
Help to men that fight for us to be free
They could use what we give
They could return to their lives
I hope. But as it goes on, more of them don’t — this fate they don’t flee
On the shore crash, all the ones before he

I continue my life
I try to go on
And help all the same
So the battle could be won
Soon, that will be us, yielding the swords
Of iron that stand bare with risk and devotion
I’d fight for my people
I’d take up the gun
But the battle may not be won — I could join the commotion
“Doomed we all are!” it cries with emotion.

Thunder rumbles today
As I stand in the rain
Letting it soak me
And mix with tears from which I can’t refrain
I peer at the people standing around, hugging
Each other holding — weeping, for he fell with motivation
This is beyond happy
This is beyond sad
I cry, I beam, I weep; I love every one of these people — this finally breaks my prenotion
We’re not waves. We’re part of the ocean.

A wave surfs the waters, foaming with glee
But on the shore crash, all the ones before he
“Doomed we all are — together,” it whispers with emotion
“I’m more than a wave — I’m part of the ocean.”
