Touch grass, they say.
It will ground you.
And I’ll listen to them because if someone knows the secret to finding normalcy I want to know it too
And so I sit on the grass
Drink coke out of a glass bottle, the undeniably best coke one can drink
Lower my shoulders and take deep breaths
But I still can’t feel grounded
Because the ground itself has shifted
The ground doesn’t feel safe anymore
This ground has been invaded and terrorized and bloodied and burnt
And I am scared all the time
Even when I’m laughing
Or playing with my kids
Or watching reality shows, the undeniably dumbest shows one can watch
I’m still scared
And I want to be happy and hopeful and share messages of inspiration and believe in a better tomorrow
But every time I close my eyes I see horror and devastation
And I know in my heart that tomorrow will not be better than today.
So I wait for the grass to do its magic
And ground me.
