He’s just a kid
His smelly shoes
His messy room
And a constant smirk on his face

I’m pretty sure that’s not what heroes look like, she said
He’s just a kid
His hair too messy
His clothes too wrinkled
And shoes that never stay tied

I don’t think that’s what a hero would say
He’s just a kid
His one word answers
His off-color jokes
And mumbled comments under his breath

He can’t be a hero, she sobbed aloud
He’s just a kid
His time not enough
His future cut short
And a memory of all that could have been
